Surfaces & Finishing
In August of 2022, hoping to gain more skills and insight in the ceramic world, I attended a workshop on the northern California Coast at the Mendocino Art Center.
The workshop, guided by the wildly talented artist and ceramics professor Rocky Lewycky, totally broadened my understanding of the ceramics world. The shift and expansion of my process was profound.
Stressing the idea of layers in finishing we completed multiple high firings and atmospheric firings; including a “side fire”, shino fire, saggar and raku firings, as well as a pit fire.
The resulting finishing work was so wonderfully strong that I went back for more a year later.
This year, 2024, I ventured back to Mendocino again for an atmospheric woodfiring that rocked my world. The processes, science, and sheer amount of work with other ceramicists is wildly inspirational and has me fired up to explore more finishing techniques.
